Challenge. Opposition. Courage.
The Seven of Wands represents challenge, opposition, and courage.
You may be facing a difficult situation in which the outcome will be related to the energy and courage you display when facing it.
Perseverance will be important.
In a careers reading, it could show that you’re facing competition for a particular job, promotion, or work project. Stand by your values and keep going. This card is telling you not to give up.
Inner strength is important.
You may be struggling to maintain your position in some way. While victory isn’t assured, if you display the vigour necessary, and if you keep going, then your chances are good. The figure shown occupies the higher ground, suggesting some advantage, and that victory is possible.
Colleagues or people who you thought friends may misrepresent you, but if you’re sure of the ground you stand on, then persist and fight for what you believe. If others don’t understand you, you may have to find new ways of explaining your point of view.
As always, compare with the other cards present.
The Seven of Wands can also show negotiations, energetic discussion where other points of view are vigorously put forward. In some readings it could be showing a trade war, or hard bartering is necessary.
The Seven of Wands reversed can show arguments, anxiety, and ignorance. There’s a danger of giving up too soon, or of becoming overwhelmed by pressures surrounding you. Be careful of becoming too defensive.
You may feel threatened, or actually be threatened.
The reversed card can also show minor victories.
The Seven of Wands (RWS) shows a man standing on higher ground, fending off attackers. The higher ground can represent his values—the things he’s willing to fight for. Victory is possible, depending on his energy and courage, but it’s not beyond doubt.
Many other tarot decks replicate the image, but often with a different feeling. The Steampunk Seven of Wands (shown above) shows a young woman standing on an edifice, defending what she believes in. The Shadowscapes Tarot shows a fox defending her young cubs from attack—she’s making a stand for what’s important to her.
The esoteric title for the Seven of Wands is Lord of Valour.
Astrologically, this card represents Mars in Leo.
